GAC leaves halls of Congress ringing with credit union message

first_imgCUNA’s Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) wrapped up Thursday and was capped with this accomplishment: Credit union leaders in town for the meeting met with the offices of nearly all 535 members of the U.S. Congress, presenting a unified voice behind the priorities of credit unions nationwide.Credit union advocates also meet with key regulators during the GAC, such as the three members of the National Credit Union Administration and often representatives of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. They bring to all meetings information to inform policy decision–but also personal stories of their service to members under the credit union philosophy of “people helping people.”As part of the final GAC outreach, credit unions from Missouri met with Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) Thursday for a morning coffee to talk about merchant data breaches and their deleterious effects, an issue credit union representatives from across the country brought to their lawmakers throughout the week.“It is critical for us to express to you what the true cost is to us,” said Jeff Kennedy, president/CEO, TwinStar, Lacey, Wash., during a meeting Wednesday with a staff member of Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-Wash.). continue reading » 1SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblrlast_img read more

Can you compete against a Google bank?

first_imgGoogle has officially become your competitor by getting a mortgage broker’s license and teaming up with Zillow to offer a mortgage comparison service for residents of the Golden State. This is important enough as the latest example of how technology companies are blurring the line between themselves and financial institutions. The news is of course also important because you don’t have to be Nostradamus to realize that this service is coming East real soon or that the ultimate aim of this partnership is to be a major player in the mortgage business.  Google has been low key about the announcement but Zillow’s press release is bubbling over with ambition: “This partnership allows us the unique opportunity to help borrowers by providing them with the industry’s most accurate, real-time information about home loans and mortgage lenders while simultaneously offering Zillow Group’s lenders increased reach for their businesses.”What really intrigues me is that Apple, Google and, more cautiously, Facebook are leveraging more than just their technological prowess; they are leveraging the goodwill and trust they have built up with consumers who have had nearly constant personal contact with their technology for most of their lives. Increasingly, credit unions can no longer compare themselves to banks and take comfort in the fact that they are more customer friendly. The real question is: are your members more likely to trust Apple with their money than your credit union? continue reading » 3SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblrlast_img read more

CUNA’s Nussle, Donovan, Gose talk post-election picture for CUs

first_imgCUNA staff prepares for a post-election webinar breaking down Tuesday’s election results. Credit unions are well positioned after Tuesday’s election into the 116th Congress, CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle said during CUNA’s post-election webinar Thursday. Nussle was joined by Chief Advocacy Officer Ryan Donovan and Chief Political Officer Richard Gose to break down the election results, which can also be found in great detail in CUNA’s post-election whitepaper.“In the wake of this election, our goal remains the same, to move forward in the best interests of America’s credit unions,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle. “CUNA, our political action committee – the Credit Union Legislative Action Committee (CULAC) invested nearly $7 million in 388 House and Senate races this year, we’ve won 349 of them, with the total number to rise as more races are called. That’s an incredibly strong performance and ensures that we will have a credit union friendly Congress. I cannot stress enough the great work all of us did to ensure we had a successful outcome.”Gose credited CUNA’s Member Activation Program and CUNA’s league partners and credit unions for generating “Get Out The Vote” buzz using CUNA’s “Credit Unions Vote” MAP Campaign, which CUNA launched in September.
