first_imgFirst and foremost, we want to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Bob Dylan for this incredible achievement. For the first time in Nobel Prize history, the Academy has awarded the Literature prize to a songwriter. No songwriter is more deserving of such an honor than the great Bob Dylan.Dylan was awarded the prize for “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition,” according to the Academy. He is the first American to receive the award since Toni Morrison in 1993, and also the first songwriter to achieve such an honor. The prize is given to someone who shows a lifetime of writing achievements, and Dylan certainly fits that mold. Though a number of authors and poets were favored to win the award, Dylan’s name has always been mentioned in those circles. Now, it seems, the times they are a-changing.A full biographical note from the Swedish Academy highlights Dylan’s extensive career, referring to him as an “icon.” With his works published as lyrical volumes and dozens of albums to his name, it’s no wonder Bob Dylan was awarded such a prize.Congratulations again to Mr. Bob Dylan! Fans can catch him performing at Desert Trip tomorrow night, for what is sure to be a very special performance.last_img
