Leipzig slump to defeat by 10-man Hertha

first_imgSelke curled in the opener for Hertha in the fifth minute, but his joy was short-lived as Hertha defender Jordan Torunarigha was controversially sent off for colliding with Timo Werner just minutes later.Hertha refused to buckle, and Salomon Kalou doubled the lead with a powerful header on the half-hour mark.Five minutes after the break, Selke was denied by goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi on the counter-attack, only to score at the far post from the resulting corner. Not until the 68th minute did Leipzig strike back, with Willi Orban heading in a cross from Bruma.Marcel Halstenberg then headed in a long ball in injury time, but it was too little, too late for an exhausted RB side.Leipzig have failed to win any of their four league games this month, and have now dropped to fifth in the Bundesliga table, level on points with fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen. In Sunday’s other game, a Leon Bailey double was not enough for Leverkusen as they were held to a thrilling 4-4 draw in Hanover.Substituted on at half-time with his team trailing 3-2, Bailey scored twice to put Bayer on course for victory, but Julian Korb’s equaliser saved a point for Hanover.Julian Brandt put Leverkusen ahead with a brilliantly controlled volley on 11 minutes, only for Ihlas Bebou to immediately head Hanover level at the other end.Leverkusen’s Leon Bailey kicks the ball during the German first division Bundesliga football match between Bayer Leverkusen and SV Werder Bremen in Leverkusen, Germany on December 13, 2017 © DPA/AFP/File / Marius BeckerNiclas Fuellkrug’s penalty then put Hanover in front, before Admir Mehmedi’s well-angled shot levelled the scores once more. The drama continued just before half-time, as Hanover struck on the counter attack, Felix Klaus whipping in a fine shot to restore the lead.Leverkusen coach Heiko Herrlich brought on Bailey at the break, and the move immediately paid off, as the Jamaican broke down the left wing and made it 3-3 two minutes into the second half.Bailey struck again 20 minutes later, putting Leverkusen into the lead with another devastating counter-attack on the left flank. However seven minutes from time, sloppy Leverkusen defending allowed Korb to squeeze in Hanover’s fourth and rescue a well-earned point for his team.“It was a crazy game, with both teams fighting from the first minute,” Bailey told Sky Sports. “We should have come out victorious, but we were not focused enough in front of goal.”0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Berlin’s forward Davie Selke (L) shoots to score the first goal next to Leipzig’s defender Willi Orban during the German first division Bundesliga football match December 17, 2017 © AFP / ROBERT MICHAELBERLIN, Germany, Dec 17 – RB Leipzig dropped out of the Bundesliga top four on Sunday after Davie Selke fired 10-man Hertha Berlin to a shock 3-2 victory at the Red Bull Arena.Former RB striker Selke grabbed a brace on his return to Leipzig, as Hertha battled to an astonishing triumph, despite going down to 10 men early in the game.last_img read more

Can Tammy Abraham make the leap in 2019/20

first_imgThe 2018/19 season wasn’t exactly a smooth one for Chelsea. From questions over the manager’s playing style, to Kepa’s very public show of insubordination, to the constant speculation over Hazard’s future, there was more than enough drama to go around at the club. Through all of that, though, they still enjoyed a successful season, winning the Europa League, reaching the League Cup final, and finishing ahead of an excellent Spurs team to claim third in the Premier League. Unfortunately for Chelsea, however, they now face an extremely challenging summer. Chelsea’s Situation Heading into 2019/20Chelsea’s final game of 2018/19 – the Europa League victory over Arsenal – took place on 29th May. Within a couple of weeks they had already lost their manager to Juventus, and their best player to Real Madrid. Transfer rumours continue to swirl around the likes of Willian, and there are huge question marks over returning loanees such as Tiémoué Bakayoko. This still might all be manageable… if it weren’t for the transfer ban. In February 2019 FIFA accused Chelsea of improper transfers for under 18’s in 29 different cases, punishing them with a hefty fine and – more importantly – a two-window transfer ban. Chelsea have already tried and failed to appeal or delay the ban, and are now appealing directly to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In case that appeal doesn’t work, they’ll be unable to sign new players until summer 2020. How Chelsea Can RespondFor many clubs, particularly those in the hyper-competitive Premier League, this transfer ban might have seemed disastrous. Chelsea, however, have spent years amassing strength in depth. Their ‘loan army’ strategy might draw ire from fans online, but in the past couple of years alone it has allowed promising youngsters like Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tammy Abraham to develop rapidly, and even break into the England ranks. If the transfer ban holds up, Chelsea will have no choice but to look internally for reinforcements, with previously-signed winger Christian Pulisic the only ‘new’ arrival. The likes of Loftus-Cheek and Callum Hudson-Odoi already saw first-team action last season, and will almost certainly experience plenty more in 2019/20. In addition, returning loanees like Abraham – who might otherwise have been loaned out again or sold – may end up being part of a number of players who can shine this year.A Striking ProblemThere’s no doubt about it – since Diego Costa banged in 20 goals in their 2016/17 title-winning campaign, Chelsea have had a problem up front.Álvaro Morata proved so disappointing after his costly arrival that he was loaned out after only 18 months, and will spend all of 2019/20 at Atlético Madrid. Olivier Giroud – while still an effective link-up man – has mustered a middling 18 goals in 63 appearances since joining Chelsea, and turns 33 in September. Eden Hazard – last season’s top scorer – is already gone. When it comes to genuine strikers leading the line in 2019/20, Chelsea have only two realistic options: Michy Batshuayi, and Tammy Abraham. Since arriving in 2016/17 from Marseille it’s fair to say that Batshuayi has failed to convince at Stamford Bridge, despite reasonable scoring returns at Chelsea and on loan at Dortmund. Perhaps his most recent loan to Crystal Palace, in which he scored 6 goals in 13 appearances – combined with their inability to recruit – will convince Chelsea to give him one more shot. Based on recent form, though… it’s Tammy Abraham who presents a far more exciting proposition. Can Abraham step up?Despite still only being 21, Tammy Abraham has already proved beyond any doubt that he can score goals. Since his senior debut he’s made 133 appearances and scored 60 goals, which is a seriously good ratio for a striker so young. He passes the eye test too, having shown impressive natural predatory instincts, and his combination of a reasonable amount of pace and a long 6’3 frame cause frequent problems for defenders.© Andrew Matthews/PA WireThe only question remains whether or not he can do it at the absolute top level, in the Premier League and Champions League, for a club of Chelsea’s pedigree. After all, while those scoring numbers are certainly impressive, the vast majority came in the Championship (first for Bristol City, then for Aston Villa). In his lone Premier League season on loan at Swansea, Abraham managed only 5 goals in 31 appearances. While there’s no way to know at this stage whether he’ll be able to cut it at Chelsea, we’d tend towards optimism. Having a striker’s instinct is something which can’t be taught, and Abraham has indisputably proven he already possesses one. He’s coming off a tremendous season too, with his 25 league goals helping Aston Villa to promotion. Finally, without wanting to sound harsh, playing up top for a Swansea side about to be relegated is one thing; playing with the likes of Pulisic, Pedro, Willian and Hudson-Odoi around you is a different proposition entirely. He wants to stay in West London, and – if given the chance to do so – may well hit the 20 goal mark in 2019/20. Betting OddsMost online bookies don’t yet feature a Top Goalscorer market for 2019/20. It’s worth keeping an eye out for when it opens, though, as you can often get excellent odds when outright markets have just opened, before the action starts to push them around. Some bookies however do have this market open. With British betting giant William Hill being one of them you can get your cash down on the outright market before the action kicks off and take advantage of generous William Hill offers and deals. The likes of Kane, Salah, Aguero and Aubameyang are leading the way at odds of less than 10/1. Vardy and Lacazette are nestling in at around 20/1 to 25/1, and we’d guess that Abraham would likely have similar odds. Given that he could certainly hit around 20 goals if given the starting job next season, and that the 2018/19 Golden Boot was shared by players who only managed 22 goals, Abraham would make a fine value play indeed at that kind of price. Microsoft’s Office Hierarchy Begins Taking Shape

first_img3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now As cloud computing and Software-as-a-Service continue to take hold, Microsoft’s flagship Office productivity suite now appears less a standalone product than a hierarchy of services, each with different levels of functionality for different markets. The big question: Will your version of Office do everything you need it to?On Wednesday, sources told the Verge that Microsoft plans a “preview” version of Office for the basic Windows RT version of the Surface tablet. That version of Office will lose support for Visual Basic, macros and third-party add-ons, specifically to optimize the Surface’s battery life. The preview version will apparently be dubbed “Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013 RT Preview,” the Verge reported. If that’s true, Office functionality will essentially be spread across three tiers: Office Web Apps for the most basic consumer use, Office RT for basic tablet use and the full-fledged Office boxed software product, also available in an Office 365 subscription model. There’s also a fourth tier that Microsoft hasn’t really talked about: Office for Mac, which will remain on the “legacy” model of the existing Office platform.Microsoft’s official line is that nothing’s done until it’s done. “We have not finalized packaging for the next release of Office,” a Microsoft spokeswoman said via email.Still, we can draw some basic conclusions. First, Office users will get different levels of functionality depending upon the device they’re working on. Second, the “premium” experience will still come with Microsoft’s Office/Office 365 for Windows 8 machines. And third, all Office users will benefit from working within a connected environment. The notion of an Office hierarchy really isn’t new; Microsoft packages different versions of Office 2010 for “Home and Students” and for “professionals,” But those packages have typically been differentiated by which applications a particular version of the Office suite includes, not so much the functionality of the included apps. The Guiding Forces of OfficeAccording to Rob Helm, an analyst for Directions on Microsoft, Office’s evolution is being shaped by two forces:“Microsoft is trying to extend Office through the Web and on portable devices, and that’s forced it to rethink how it extends Office, so that it has a solution that extends to all these different places that Office runs,” Helm said. “But that means saying goodbye to a lot of old buddies for a lot of Office users.”Those “buddies” represent the legacy of macros and Visual Basic helper applications, which corporations have used to customize Office for their own use. Directions on Microsoft, for example, has traditionally used a VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) module to assist its analysts in creating and displaying Microsoft’s org [organization] charts, Helm said.If Surface users want to run VBA code, however, they will need to have the more expensive Surface Pro, which will run the full-fledged Windows 8 operating system as well as the standard Office suite.“It’s pretty clear that the technology that Microsoft has been promoting for applications, Visual Basic, has been left behind by technical trends: the Web and tablets,” Helm said. “Microsoft is trying to get to a new generation of technology and cutting out the old technology in Windows RT is the first sign that the old technology is going away, and the new Web-based Office development is coming in.”And what is an Office app? “Essentially a Web page integrated into Office as custom content, very similar to how iFrames integrate with other pages on the Web,” Rolando Jimenez, a program manager for Microsoft, wrote in a blog post this week. Specifically, the app is a Web page, most often with a Javascript pointer to the Office Javascript library, plus a lightweight XML description of how the app interacts with Office. Apps will work offline, Microsoft said. Tags:#enterprise#Microsoft#Software Office Store Open for BusinessIn other Office developments, Microsoft opened the Office Store this week, where users can download a Merriam-Webster dictionary plugin for Word, for example, or an Olympics medal tracker app for Microsoft Excel. As with the Microsoft Windows Store, Microsoft will take 30% of the revenue from each paid app sale. The Office Store is also the showcase for the new Web-based Office app model. Developers can still use Visual Basic and Visual Studio for Office, but Microsoft won’t allow versions of the app to be available via the Office Store, Brian Jones, Group Program Manager on the Office Solutions Framework team, said this week.Helm – from Directions on Microsoft – said he believed that the VBA model would prove to be a “real challenge” to the ARM architecture underlying the lower-priced Surface RT tablet, another key reason for its omission. But, he added, he also believed that Microsoft would inevitably extend the Office app model to the Surface RT tablet and even Office Web Apps.“Eventually Microsoft will want to extend apps to where-ever Office runs,” Helm said.“If the Office Store doesn’t support Office RT, that’s because Office RT hasn’t broken cover yet,” Helm added. What About Mac Office? So far, Office for Mac has been conspicuously left out of the discussion. Microsoft has said only that the new model for Office apps won’t apply to the next version of Office for the Mac. The most significant recent changes for Office for Mac 2011 has been adding cloud storage via Microsoft’s SkyDrive and support for Apple’s “Mountain Lion” release.“You’ll see that this is really just the first step in a new direction for Office programmability,” Brian Jones, group program manager of the Office Solutions group, wrotein response to a user question. “We would love to have had support across all of the platforms where Office runs, but for the first version we weren’t able to accomplish that. We [are] instead targeting the Windows client and the Web companion, but designed the app model in a way that we can start to add other platforms as well as we move forward.”In some sense, that places Office for Mac in the same “legacy” category as Office 2010, leaving Mac Office users on the outside looking in at the new app model. That could push Mac users to competing productivity applications, from Google Docs to Apple’s own iWork suite. What About Windows Phone?Microsoft also hasn’t talked much about how Windows Phone and Office will interact, although Paul Thurott has noted that Office 365 will set up a live tile on the Windows Phone home screen, and users will be able to access a Lync client (for unified communications) and gain access to SharePoint collaboration sites.Microsoft’s Office vision is simple, yet powerful: a connected workplace, where the appropriate form of Office functionality is available on whatever device you’re using. But there are issues, too, because not every version of Office will support everything you may need to do. Some business users, for example, will realize that their little bit of legacy VBA code may keep them from relying on lower-priced, lower-powered ARM-based devices running Windows 8 RT – including the entry-level Surface.Microsoft sign image courtesy of Shutterstock.
