NewFronts West Showcases Podcasts Influencer Marketing in Inaugural LA Event

first_imgThe kick-off day of the first-ever Digital Content NewFronts West conference in Hollywood highlighted two trends: the expansion of digital media forms like podcasting, as well as creative approaches to advertising, especially influencer marketing.Anna Bager, the executive VP of industry initiative at IAB, which manages the event, said the L.A. iteration was designed to be different from its New York counterpart in focusing on branded and sponsored content, as well as content creators. NewFronts West runs Oct. 9-10.The Los Angeles Times on Tuesday announced that following the success of its narrative podcast “Dirty John,” the company will roll out similar formats through 2019 with additional podcasts. They include “Big Willie,” about drag racer and local legend Big Willie Robinson, and “Room 20,” which follows an investigative reporter’s search to uncover a hospital patient’s identity. ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. The company has had success with longer videos from PureWow or ONE37pm’s handle that craft a plot around a brand, such as its recent musical short that promoted Olay, called “I Can’t Wait to Wash My Face.”Both Gallery and FameBit by YouTube focused on new strategies in influencer marketing. Beau Avril, the global head of business operations at FameBit, said the company has developed tools like a measurement to track brand interest lift and find if searches for a brand term increases after influencers mention it in a video.Avril said audiences are more skeptical than ever about traditional advertising and 92 percent of consumers trust product recommendations more when coming from their peers on social media, like social influencers. He says FameBit has been working with influencers to naturally implement a brand’s products in their videos, whether through the “get ready with me” format or cooking segments. YouTuber Freddie Wong, who has worked with brands through FameBit, said brands must offer something that complements and elevates his storytelling, as a straightford promotional video would result in viewers labelling him a “sell-out.” Wong cited successful collaborations with the likes of Dodge Dart for a video about racing and the thriller film “Mile 22” for an action short about his quest to get tickets to the film’s premiere.“In a world where we’re lacking that authenticity but also that relevance and that relatability, the epicenter of that happens on these channels, in that content,” Avril said. “Because these moments are so special and they’re so pointed, as a brand being in those conversations really gives you a chance to shape opinions and even drive decisions.”Some 20 companies are presenting at the IAB’s NewFronts West conference at NeueHouse in Hollywood. Google Employees Call on Internet Giant to Kill Censored China Search Engine

first_imgGoogle declined to comment on the letter. The new call for Google to kill Dragonfly comes after around 1,400 employees signed an internal petition in August demanding more details about the project, per the New York Times. Earlier this year, after Google employees blasted the company’s work on behalf of the Pentagon with Project Maven — which used artificial-intelligence imaging to improve the accuracy of drone strikes — the company declined to renew the contract.Amnesty International will stage protests outside several Google offices Tuesday as part of calling for an end to the Chinese search engine, the Intercept reported. The protests over the China search engine come after more than 20,000 Google workers worldwide on Nov. 1 walked off the job to protest over the company’s handling of the sexual-harassment cases. In response, Google revised some of its sexual-misconduct policies, including ending forced arbitration in such cases, although some employees say the company still needs to do more.Google CEO Sundar Pichai has characterized the censored China search engine as an “experiment” that is not close to being launched. Speaking earlier this month at the New York Times’ DealBook conference, Pichai said the project was to explore “what would our product look like [in China].”Last week, an interview with Bloomberg, John Hennessy — chairman of Alphabet, Google’s parent — expressed reservations about launching a censored search engine in China. “Anybody who does business in China compromises some of their core values… because the laws in China are quite a bit different than they are in our own country,” he said.According to the Google employees opposing Project Dragonfly, the act of providing the Chinese government with “ready access to user data, as required by Chinese law, would make Google complicit in oppression and human rights abuses.” A group of Google employees is demanding that the company pull the plug on “Project Dragonfly,” its initiative to create a censored search engine for China that would comply with the country’s internet laws.“We are Google employees and we join Amnesty International in calling on Google to cancel project Dragonfly, Google’s effort to create a censored search engine for the Chinese market that enables state surveillance,” the employees wrote in an open letter posted Tuesday. The letter, posted on Medium, has been signed by 36 Google staffers, and organizers said they will add more names as others sign on. [UPDATE: As of Wednesday at 7 a.m. ET, 332 employees were listed as signatories.] The letter also calls on Google’s senior management to “commit to transparency, clear communication, and real accountability. Google is too powerful not to be held accountable. We deserve to know what we’re building and we deserve a say in these significant decisions.” Popular on Variety center_img ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. 6 Han Solo Comics You Should Be Reading

first_imgStay on target Mattel Unveils Fashionable ‘Star Wars’ x Barbie Dolls‘Star Wars: Resistance’ Finale Sets Up ‘The Rise of Sk… Han Solo is a man who seems to have lived many different lives among the galaxy. In the Star Wars universe, there’s a couple of ways writers, artists, developers, creators and more have explored this smuggler from Corellia. Books, video games, spin-off films and, for our purposes here, comics books have played a big part in expanding the universe and bringing us new stories and characters to love. Before Solo comes out, we’ve compiled a list of Han Solo comics that you should be reading before he makes his young big screen debut.HAN SOLO(W): Marjorie Liu (P): Mark Brooks (I): Mark Brooks & Dexter Vines (C) Sonia Oback with Matt Milla (L): Joe Caramagnavia MarvelIf you’re going to pick a comic that’s solely Han Solo on a wild adventure, you need to read Han Solo for yourself. Han Solo focuses on Solo reluctantly accepting a top-secret mission from Leia that involves him picking up informants for the Rebellion. This comes at a very steep cost because to complete his task he’ll have to take place in the Dragon Void – an intergalactic space race. In the mists of all this, there’s a traitor to the Rebellion aboard the Falcon, just what Han needs. Will Han be able to complete his dream of winning the ultimate title in the Dragon Void? Will he be able to complete the mission for Leia without letting his ego get in the way?Marjorie Liu spins a narrative that’s entirely out of this atmosphere. She pits Han between whats right and wrong and his ever-growing ego and reputation. Liu knows how to weave an excellent narrative as well as nail Han’s characterization from screen to comics. Brooks’ pencils are to die for, creating a visually stunning work of art. This is only matched by his inks with Dexter Vines by his side. In that, we have stellar colors from Sonia Oback with Matt Milla and letters by Joe Caramagna. Han Solo is the perfect stand-alone that leaves you completely enthralled and entertained from start to finish.STAR WARS ADVENTURES – HAN SOLO AND THE HOLLOW MOON OF KHORYA(W): Jeremy Barlow (A): Rick Lacy (I): Matthew Loux (C): Michael Atiyeh (L): Michael Heislervia Dark HorseAfter another disastrous and dangerous mission, Han and Chewbacca race away to live another day. Chewie is understandably upset with Han, telling him that he’s way too reckless. Han suggests they take a little bit of time away from each other. This comes sooner than later. Han is recruited (captured) to carry out a mission to retrieve a droid with his old partner Billal. Han and Chewbacca quickly learn that they need each other to keep in other in line, balance each other out and for their own sanity’s.This all-ages adventure is something that everyone will enjoy and tests the friendship of the most loved besties in the universe. Jeremy Barlow writes Han Solo and the Hollow Moon of Khorya with such heart that it’s impossible not to give it such praise. It’s short but provides a space venture worth taking. Rick Lacy gives a cartoonish, wacky style with his art, especially in the many facial expression the character uses and with Matthew Loux on inks, he brings this out tenfold. The colors of Michael Atiyeh are bright and fresh yet gives you a feeling of a fun-filled adventure that you’ll be able to sink into.STAR WARS: SHATTERED EMPIRE (W): Greg Rucka (A): Marco Checchetto, Angel Unzueta, Emilio Laiso (C): Andres Mossa (L): Joe Caramagnavia MarvelPalpatine’s reign should have come to an end, but just like tyrants, you can never keep one down and out for long. In Shattered Empire, Emperor Palpatine’s reign never truly comes even after death. The planet must find a way to build itself back up in the mists after the Battle of Endor. Just like a snake, Palpatine finds his way to slither himself into playing a dominant force in another catastrophic event as he commands Operation Cinder start at once.Han doesn’t play a massive role in Shattered Empire, but he does make his presence known. We mostly see Shattered Empire through the lives of Shara Bey, Poe Dameron’s mum! Yes, you also get Poe’s handsome father Kes Dameron as well. Shattered Empire is set after Return of the Jedi. Greg Rucka does an outstanding job in weaving the original trio in with new characters. If you look closely, Shara and Kes almost mirror Han and Leia in some ways. This might be me reading way too into it, but I also find it kind of cute. If you’re interested in the inner workings of Operation: Cinder, look into playing Battlefront II (if you want to, just saying).STAR WARS: VADER DOWN (W): Jason Aaron & Kieron Gillian (A): Mike Deodato, Salvador Larroca (C): Frank Martin Jr., Edgar Delgado (L): Joe Caramagna, Chris Eliopoulosvia MarvelThe Vader series written by Kieron Gillian and the Star Wars series written by Jason Aaron are two of the well-made and definitive Star Wars books you’ll come across. Both of these writers come together in perfect harmony for a trade that’s utterly impossible to describe how insanely ingenious it is. When Darth Vader crash-lands on Vrogas Vas, he’s immediately surrounded by the Rebellion. To get out of there alive, he has to fight his way out. He doesn’t care if he has to do it through one rebel at a time. The exciting thing about Vader Down is how much they pack into one giant trade! It honestly blows your mind how action-packed it gets, and the story keeps picking up, never slowing down for you whatsoever. Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Leia Organa shine in this volume as they (especially Leia) face off against Vader. You also have fantastic new characters from the Vader series laced in such as Aphra, Triple-Zero, and BT-1. We’re met with some cool fights like Chewbacca vs. Black Krrsantan, which you need to get behind. This series will be something of a classic because of the epic storytelling behind two greats and the art behind some of the best the stars have to offer.STAR WARS – HAN SOLO: AT STARS’ END(W): Archie Goodwin (A): Alfredo Alcala (C): Penny McNamee via MarvelLooking for some classic Han Solo adventures? There’s no classic comic better than Han Solo: At Stars’ End. This classic is an adaptation of Brian Daley’s novel of the same name. The Millennium Falcon is in desperate need of repairs, and Han can’t make the repairs on his own. Han and Chewie land in the Corporate Sector – a neutral playground between the corporation and the Empire. They meet up with Jessa, and she immediately makes a deal with Han. If he helps her find her father Doc, then they’ll make repairs to the ship and give him the Waiver that he needs. Han, reluctantly, takes this offer and all things go downhill from there. Chewie is taken to Stars’ End, a prison they were hoping to free others from but now Chewie’s held hostage! This is one of the best classic Star Wars stories I’ve read in such a long time. It feels timeless and very much captures the relationship that Chewbacca and Han have with each other and the lengths he’ll go through to get back his friend. Goodwin shines adapting the novel into slick comics that you can treasure. He doesn’t skip on how slick Solo can be, but also not afraid to turn up the flirty resourcefulness of our leading man as well.STAR WARS – SKYWALKER STRIKES VOL. 1(W): Jason Aaron (A): John Cassaday (C): Laura Martin (L): Chris Eliopoulos via MarvelOne of THE best Star Wars comics out now the Star Wars comics from 2015 til now. They’re incredibly detailed, exploring the world and characters of Star Wars as we’ve never seen before. In this series, Luke, Leia, Han and the rest of the gang come out of the massive triumph of blowing up the Death Star. However, things aren’t always as they seem. The Emperor and his apprentice Darth Vader are still out there making massive plans for the universe. The gang plans to attack the Empire when everything goes wrong, leading all of them to scramble and find a way out.Coming out of A New Hope and into Empire Strikes Back, this is the perfect companion piece to the movies. Again, not only does this explore worlds and characters, but it brings in new characters that we’ve never seen before. Jason Aaron and his creative team utterly slay this series with everything they have. It always weaves it’s way to other tie-in’s but always comes back to the source. We see more from insanely dope characters like Boba Fett and Obi-Wan. We also recieve characters like the beautiful, stunning, gorgeous, fine as hell Sana Solo, Han Solo’s wife! This is one comic series that you should definitely check out, especially if you’re a loyal fan of the original trilogy and want more.In addition to these Han Solo comics, here’s a list of other titles that you should be reading.LANDO – (W): Charles Soule (A): Alex Maleev (CA): Paul Mounts (L): Joe CaramagnaSTAR WARS INFINITIES: A NEW HOPE – (W): Chris Warner (A): Drew JohnsonCHEWBACCA – (W): Gerry Duggan (A): Phil NotoSTAR WARS ADVENTURES #10 – (W): Cavan Scott, Elsa Charretier, Pierrick Colinet (A): Derek Charm, Elsa Charretier (C): Sarah Stern (L): Tom B. HalfLife 3 appears on Gamescom list launching this week

first_imgGamescom, a popular video games conference held in Cologne, begins tomorrow and it’s sure to offer a glimpse of a few new games we’ll all be wanting to play this coming holiday season. And one of those games might be Half-Life 3.Yes, we’re all sick of Half-Life 3 rumors and then subsequent non-appearance of the game for years, but this time I feel safe in getting my hopes up.Gamescom produces its own, official list of all the titles that will be on display for the six days that it runs. The list is 3 pages long and includes well over 100 games, but there’s one name on there I doubt anyone expected to see. On page three, six places from the bottom, is listed “Half-Life 3.”Let’s just reiterate here that this is the official product list for the Gamescom show. It’s available on the official site in PDF form, which you can view for yourself. If this is a mistake it’s one either Valve has made for telling the organizers they would be there to show it off, or someone at Gamescom is misinformed and added it by accident or as a (bad) joke.I’m hoping it’s neither, and Valve fully intend to demonstrate and launch Half-Life 3 before the week is over.As for other notable new games we can expect to see during Gamescom, there are plenty. A few standout titles worth mentioning include BioShock Infinite, Borderlands 2, Lost Planet 3, Resident Evil 6, Crysis 3, and top of many a gamer’s list, Dragon Age 3.via Xperience Gaminglast_img read more

Runaway bum blimp makes historic first flight

first_imgLook! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No it’s…. a flying butt? The 302-foot-long Airlander 10 was unveiled yesterday evening in Cardington Airfield, Bedfordshire. While it was a historic flight for what’s notably the largest aircraft ever created, it also looked positively posteriorly.Airlander 10’s maiden voyage was a small one as it just performed a five-mile lap of the airfield at 500 feet in the air, but it was a successful test that could have big ramifications for air travel. For one thing, the engines are quieter than planes or helicopters, and it features benefits of both aircraft. It has the potential to carry 50 tons of freight and do so in areas that can’t have runways, since it can take off and land like a helicopter. While the top speed isn’t very vast (92 mph) it’s easy to maneuver, and since it can carry more over longer distances it’s cheaper and better for the planet.@modjo1978 @CardingtonSheds that’s a great pic of an iconic moment #cardingtonhangars #Airlander pic.twitter.com/Emle8IR3Ji— Hammers Legend @3 (@niceyz521) August 17, 2016“It was privilege to fly the Airlander for the first time and it flew wonderfully,” said Chief Test Pilot Dave Burns. “I’m really excited about getting it airborne. It flew like a dream.”Technical tests were performed on its hull pressure during the flight. (Don’t worry- it’s full of helium, not hydrogen, so unless you’re Archer you should have no concerns about accidents.) The flight launched, flew, and landed safely, with all test objectives met. <> The Airlander 10 is being considered for a variety of functions, such as passenger travel, aid, communications, and even surveillance, because nothing says dystopian future like airships looming overhead. At least people will be able to giggle a bit while having their privacy invaded.“It’s a great British innovation,” said HAV chief executive officer Stephen McGlennan to Sky. ”It’s a combination of an aircraft that has parts of normal fixed wing aircraft, it’s got helicopter, it’s got airship.”It’s sure got plenty. We can’t wait to see where the Airlander 10 goes next.last_img read more

A new way to redownload PT on PS4 has been discovered

first_imgDue to the falling out between Konami and Hideo Kojima, Silent Hills was prematurely scrapped. To make matters worse, Konami even went as far as removing the game’s “playable teaser” from the PlayStation Network Store. Unfortunately, those who didn’t keep PT safely stored in their PS4 hard drive would be denied a chance to play the game again if they had deleted it. At least, that was the case. Thanks to a new method discovered by Wololo.net, players can now re-download the game if they’re willing to put in a little effort. In order to make this work, you’re going to set up your PS4 to use your PC as a proxy. To do that you’ll need to download a program called SUWI. While you’re installing SUWI, leave all of the options ticked. Make sure to download an IP checker so that you can write down your IP address. On your PS4, go to settings, then network, then set up internet connection. Choose custom setup and select the right network. After that, hit automatic for IP address settings, do not specify for DHCP host name, select automatic for DNS settings, automatic for MTU settings, then hit use for proxy server. After all of that, enter your IP address and make sure to set your port number to 808. Hit next to complete the setup. Then go into your PS4 game library, find PT, and set it to download. Note that this method only works if you had previously downloaded PT. If you never had the game on your hard drive then you are out of luck.To find out more about the technical side of how this all works, make sure to check out Wololo.net’s detailed guide. Below, check out Eurogamer’s video walkthrough on how to get it all set up.last_img read more

Nintendo Labo Toys Wed Like to Build

first_img Trade In Your Nintendo Switch For a Better Battery (With a Catch)’Astral Chain’ and Other Dumb Nintendo Songs With Labo, Nintendo made us all jealous of today’s kids. The Nintendo Switch was already nifty enough with its ability to swap between console and handheld play. But the recently revealed Labo line of accessories and games allows the tablet and detachable controllers to become a whole range of smart cardboard toys and robots. In case you missed it, here’s what all the nerdy DIY maker STEM children will be getting their hands on this 4/20 starting at $69.The initial Labo sets include “Toy-Con” pianos, RC cars, fishing rods, houses, motorcycle handles, and an entire mech suit cobbled together from failed Wii U demo “Project Giant Robot.” But beyond these confirmed kits the trailer shows off potential Labo birds, driving pedals, arcade joysticks, and little men who collapse when they vibrate too hard. Very relatable.Since it’s literally cardboard, Nintendo could let kids make whatever they want with Labo. And the toys seem so appealing that we suspect Labo will be a big hit that continues past these first two sets. That sparked our own crazy imaginations as to what other Labo toys may be on the horizon. So these are our humble suggestions for Nintendo Labo toys we personally would like to build.A Creepy Puppet and/or Real BoySome kids play with toys with their friends. Others use toys to make up for their lack of friends. A creepy Nintendo Labo puppet could fill both needs. Put the Switch screen in its chest like a Teletubby. Maybe it uses the IR camera to scan a rough approximation of your emotions and react accordingly. And if you wish hard enough, that cardboard smart dummy might just become a real boy.WarioWare GamesThe WarioWare series is a brilliant deconstruction of minigame collections and game design itself. It’s long past time for Nintendo to bring it back and Labo might just be the perfect avenue. The overarching WarioWare plot has that greedy greasy jerk demanding players make their own games for Wario to profit off of. But with Labo, Wario can now force you to build entire new physical video game accessories and systems, all in fifteen seconds of course.Steel Battalion MechThe Steel Battalion series is infamous for its absurd control schemes. The first two games forced players to control mechs using gargantuan controllers with no less than 40 buttons and sticks. There was a windshield wiper button! Steel Battalion on Kinect went in the opposite direction and ditched the controller for a full-body motion control giant robot experience. Nintendo Labo could bridge the two, allowing you to build your own dumb complicated mech you then get to become.A Weapon to Surpass Metal GearThere are a lot of iconic elements in the Metal Gear Solid series. Solid Snake. The twist in part two. The delivery of the phrase “Metal Gear?!?” But when thinking of this classic stealth series, who doesn’t remember hiding inside a plain old cardboard box to evade foes? Metal Gear was combining cardboard and gaming long before Labo, but Labo might be the cardboard video game to finally surpass Metal Gear.Fallout TechThe post-apocalyptic world of Bethesda’s Fallout series is littered with bootleg scrap technology plucked out of the future of the 1950s. And sometimes that tech falls into the real-world like the collector’s edition wrist-mounted Pip-Boy. Paying in bottle caps and playing with cardboard are already a perfect match. Plus, Bethesda is already all in on Switch with Skyrim, Doom, and Wolfenstein ports. Complete the set with Fallout Labo.Failed Nintendo AccessoriesJust as the Nintendo Switch draws inspiration from past Nintendo systems, Nintendo Labo draws inspiration from past Nintendo accessories. Why make specific plastic guns and steering wheels and tennis rackets for Switch, like the Wii, when they could just be cardboard? In that spirit, we’d like to see past failed weird Nintendo accessories get a cardboard resurrection with Labo. Cardboard Power Glove, cardboard Virtual Boy, cardboard R.O.B., cardboard Wii U.Bitcoin MinerBitcoin! Everyone is getting in on this hot new cryptocurrency trend before it ruins all of our marriages and global economies. And it’s already affecting video games. PC enthusiasts are finding it tough to buy high-end graphics cards because Bitcoin miners keep scooping them up. So Nintendo Labo should just lean into this. Let kids build their own cardboard Bitcoin mining machine and take home (a portion of) the profits. Nothing sketchy about that.Buy it now!Super Mario OdysseyThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WildNintendo SwitchProtect Your Nintendo Switch With These Awesome CasesLet us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. Need for Speed Heat Has Vice City Vibes

first_img Burnout had to die for Need to Speed to live as EA’s one true action-packed open-world racing game franchise (and Aaron Paul movie). But while the first couple of Criterion takes on the series were pretty great, Need for Speed has only slowed down for pretty much this entire generation of consoles. It cooled, as it were. Can things turn around? Check out this first trailer for the next game: Need for Speed Heat.2017’s Need for Speed Payback was an off brand Fast and Furious movie taking place in an off brand Las Vegas. Need for Speed Heat seems to be going down the same road, only now it takes place in an off brand Miami, the fictional Palm City. Between the tropical setting and very aesthetic colors in the logo, we thought this might be a 1980s cocaine adventure like Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. But the trailer definitely takes place in contemporary car culture.Gameplay details are scarce. The trailer is selling a vibe more than anything else. But we do know that day/night cycle determines the racing events you can take part in, with things getting extra illegal after dark. You can still customize your cars, possibly more than ever before. And it continues the great Need for Speed traditions of making crooked cops the bad guys you need to outrace to free the streets.Need for Speed Heat launches November 8 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
